There is no right or wrong way in caring for your child with Duchenne
The team will be led by a neuromuscular expert who will take overall responsibility for the care of the Duchenne individual. Musculoskeletal management requires a team approach, so many other specialists will be involved. A comprehensive approach is necessary to ensure quality care for the individual with Duchenne and to foster communication between the various specialists. Much like a machine’s gears work together to operate effectively; each specialist must also work together and maintain clear, consistent communication. Each member of the team will contribute their expertise to support and enhance the well-being of the individual throughout their lifetime.
Health Care Team Members
The neuromuscular team will begin with a provider designated as the team leader, which is often a neurologist. A pediatrician or primary care provider is a necessary part of the team. Depending on the needs of the individual, members of the neuromuscular health care team may include:
- Cardiologist
- Pulmonologist
- Gastroenterologist
- Endocrinologist
- Orthopaedist
- Psychiatrist
- Genetic Counsellor
- Physical Therapist
- Dietician or Nutritionist
- Occupational Therapist
- Ophthalmologist
- Speech-Language Pathologist
- Social Worker
